Joyce is very old, perhaps not so wise, and is a professor Emeritus at Southern CT State University in New Haven, CT, where she taught Special Education for 40 years. She has been studying and lecturing about laughter since 1983, and her doctoral dissertation from Columbia University was entitled “Humor in Adult Learning”. She was the proud recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH) as well as the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Academy of Continuing Education at the Mandel Center.

She really believes in this stuff, and gives close to 100 lectures each year on subjects relating to humor, aging, and positive attitude, donating all her fees to a variety of charities — having contributed close to 2 million dollars thus far!

Good Morning Catherine,
Thank you so much for a fabulous presentation on new Zealand last evening. Our audience loved it! I have been receiving such positive feedback and wanted to share with you the comments I received thus far. As I mentioned last night, your enthusiasm for New Zealand shines through the screen and I do hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and will return in the future.

I just wanted to tell you “Thank you” for the amazing presentation today. You successfully wove together a good immigration story with a “how I did it” on A.I. Truly a job well done.

Just so you know, there were 49 people who attended in person, and about 67 on Zoom. Our best attended session post COVID. And we had several people join as new members, including a couple who happened to be in the library and stopped in to see what was going on!

And, please check out the JGSPBC Facebook page. Marjorie Feldman posted a very nice comment about your presentation.

In short — a five star presentation. Thank you!!

Mark was terrific! He clearly has a passion for advertising! The Superbowl Ad presentation took everyone (veterans and staff) on a fun trip down memory lane. It seemed to pique a bit of curiosity about what this year held, as well. Mark said he has a presentation about Minnesota advertising and it is one we will consider booking in the future!

A Humorous Look At Sex And Aging

Through a minimum of scientific data and a maximum of humor, this session will deal with the trials and tribulations of being a Senior! Combining research about this important topic for the “senior citizen” set (those of us who are old but not dead!), Joyce will show the beauty of having loving relationships rather than Olympic sex, how insignificant “perfect bodies” are (when our vision is not that good anyway!), and how to see all of our aging issues in a humorous light.

The Joys Of Being Chronologically Endowed

First, the good news – according to a study done at the Univ of Chicago, which was the most thorough study of happiness which began in 1972, Americans are happier as they grow older. This was followed up in 2008 in an extensive telephone survey of 340,000 ages 18-85, confirming those results. The data, published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed that feelings of stress and inadequacy increase from 18-50, after which, feelings of well-being steadily improve, showing those in their 80s are far happier! In addition, studies show that body temp declines as we age, so the elderly are actually “the coolest people on earth!”

BTW – Joyce also shares her recent research on longevity being aided by several foods that were previously banned, and other surprising health info!

Needless to say, this presentation contains lots of humor for those of us in the last 40 years of our lives!!!

Sex vs. Chocolate

Joyce literally “wrote the book” on this! (Seriously: It’s on Amazon!) The age-old competition between these two favorites will be explained, discussed and resolved (?), of course! Joyce, who is an SM (sex maniac) and chocoholic, addicted to Aldi’s peanut butter cups, will be giving us the low-down on two of the most wonderful activities in the world, with some actual information, and lots of humor!!!

The audience gets to vote for the winner at the end of the presentation!!!

Are You In Your Right Mind?

This session is a perfect keynote or workshop, as it is interactive and fun. Lecture will explore individual differences through left-brain/right brain research, in an effort to understand and appreciate these differences in ourselves and others. Using an informal checklist created by Dr. Marie Carbo (with permission) we will readily see areas of agreement and conflict and look at ways to use this insight to improve communications

NOTE: Each participant must have a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.

Laughter: Rx For Survival

This seminar will deal with the physiological benefits of laughter, studies on the mind-body connection, and practical (plus some not-so-practical!) suggestions on ways to bring more laughter into your life. The lecture combines scientific data with comedy, in an effort to provide a mirth-¬provoking educational experience.

A Look At Humor Through Every Stage In Our Lives

This session will deal with the kind of humor enjoyed by each developmental stage, showing participants a way to look at humor through the ages. You will look at jokes for every stage of your life. You will see why we need to laugh as we lose our minds or eyesight, as laughter keeps us healthy wealthy and wise! (It is always good to have dreams!!!)

Jewish Mothers: Is There A Difference? A look At The History Of Jewish Mothers

Long maligned as over-protective, prideful and pushy, Jewish mothers have been the subject of novels, articles and hundreds of jokes. In an attempt to uncover the true nature of Jewish mothers through history, this session will offer some insights, as well as much humor!

Jewish Women Who Have Changed The World

Looking at the list of notables in American life, it would be difficult to label women as “the weaker sex.” This session will focus on the women whose achievements changed the world, and will include the creation of the first bra, clothing for plus size women, and many others!

Laugh – It’s Good For You: A Look At Jewish Humor

While Jewish people constitute less than 2.3% of the American population, 80% of the professional comedians have traditionally been Jewish. What is it about the Jewish heritage that yields such hilarity? Is there really something unique about Jewish humor? Join us for an evening of learning and laughter with Joyce Saltman, who has been studying the topic since her birth in 1943!
