This talk explores the so-called Eyewitness Style in Florence and Venice during the 1480s and 90s. Marked by its profusion of recognizable onlookers (in unrelated holy scenes), this style proliferated in the artistic capitals of Italy just prior to the High Renaissance of Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael. This talk examines the style through the lens of Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo’s teacher, in Florence, and Vittore Carpaccio in Venice.
