Sometimes in life, when certain elements are so prevalent in our society they are often overlooked and not given the attention they deserve. The same rings true when it comes to public awareness for some types of cancer. Worldwide, lung cancer is the most common type of cancer among both men and women combined. Also, lung cancer statistically ranks the highest for cancer-related deaths. Because of these facts, it would seem that lung cancer awareness would be very important in our culture. However, it is rarely ever discussed or even known with any significant detail. This presentation is designed to provide enlightenment about a very serious type of cancer that is so common in our society. To begin, the audience is made aware of the prevalence of lung cancer through the brief use of statistical data. After these attention-grabbing details are shared, the presentation continues with an overview of how the lungs function in a healthy context and how the body benefits from this vital organ system. Over the course of a lifetime, the lungs are constantly exposed to agents that cause lung damage which can lead to the development of lung cancer. Like many other types of cancer, lung cancer takes on several different forms that have varying degrees of severity. The more common forms of lung cancer are explained along with the staging system that is used at the time of the diagnosis. The standard treatment approaches are described as well as how these therapies are designed to eliminate the malignancy. The presentation concludes with information about lung cancer prevention and the promotion of lung cancer awareness.
