Over the course of a decade from 1955 to 1965, Hollywood’s adaptations of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s acclaimed Broadway hits transformed the movie musical, combining polished productions, strong performances, and exceptional attention to their masterful scores. Though live productions of their work still take place all over the world, it’s the film versions of musicals like Oklahoma, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music, that have truly kept their legacy alive. This lecture will look at how the classic works of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein were transferred to the big screen and the varying approaches used in casting, staging, and producing some of the most popular and influential movie musicals ever made.
